Group Task
The class were given a scenario where a man in America finished a gig late at night and realised he had to travel on a freeway to an Audition that is usually a four hour drive away. He had to be there early in the morning and needed 2hrs sleep minimum.
MIKE’S AUDITION
1.What would be on your list of assumptions - if you were Mike?
Not much traffic on the road during the early hours of the morning
2.Challenge each item in the list and find a solution to Mike’s problem
Take a taxi if money is no problem and you could get sleep at the same time
3. Share the results and enter them in your BLOG

Company Logo for an Irrigation business
• In your Visual Diary make a list of 2 assumptions about your design
Assumptions:
The Logo will be printed on Invoices, Business Cards, Clothing, Signs, Car Signwriting, and Stickers
The Logo will be used for a long time
• Challenge both of these assumptions (200 words minimum)
I will need to brainstorm a few design ideas with the client to make sure it will be print friendly and able to be applied on various surfaces and applications. It will have to be simple to the point, integrate the right colours and imagery that clearly defines the identity of the client, his business and contact details. Some clients may print the design in black & white from their printers e.g. invoices and so it must be looked at in mono to make sure it is still clear and recognisable. The colours chosen must reflect the industry and be picked up quite easily by even the most ancient of printers.
The logo will have to stand the test of time with fads and changes to styles throughout at least a decade to keep the business recognisable and remembered without looking out-dated or kitsch. It will need to be a design with clean edges aso any further design or print advances in the next ten years can accurately re-produce the image and apply it to different mediums. The logo will have to be aesthetically pleasing to the majority of the world if it goes big over time to bring the psychological happiness when one sets eyes on the image.
• Suggest 2 refinements to solve these challenges (200 words minimum)
In order to get to the point of the logo I will need to sit down with the client and get to know them, what they are about, who their target market is, the size of their business and where they want to be in ten years. This can all be integrated into a checklist that the client can either fill out by email, face to face meeting or conversed through a friendly chat over lunch. I think I will get more of an idea in person to get the character you can’t always pick up over email or the phone. This will shape the design of the logo. I will print both colour and mono versions of the early designs to keep on track making sure the designs can be clearly defined in both. I will give thought to the favoured colours the client wants to use however aim to keep simple recognisable colours that are associated with the Irrigation industry and general outdoor surroundings. The logo will have to utilise a traditional sprinkler in the image and not an unfamiliar or one off design that is unrecognisable.

How To Setup and Design Business Cards in Adobe Illustrator
Commentary
Today’s clip was about the design of business cards in Adobe Illustrator. I found this clip very slow and drawn out. When choosing a video to watch to help with my design process this actually looked the best pick. The audio was clear as day and the nerdy narrator had fairly good clear pronunciation but repeatedly forgot what he was talking about. He had many pauses that could have made this ten-minute clip into a concise five-minute presentation. It became very annoying but he gave good file saving tips. He has a few different file versions for print and editing. The zoom for the screen was perfect. I would give him a 6 out of 10 for being slow and dry yet clear and understanding.
Reflection
Today was the first day that I have come up with a feasible design for 2D. My younger brother has an Irrigation Business and he asked me to Design a Logo for his company. I work for him one or two days a week so I know what goes on in the business and will have a lot of time to fine-tune what he wants. I will have to brush up on my Adobe Illustrator software skills to bring a pleasing result.
Designing a logo that is pleasing to the majority of the world? An ambitious task indeed, but good to see a positive attitude alive and kicking. Good to see you have a 2D concept now.
ReplyDeleteGood blog, by the way - you are nailing this unit. Well done.
