 Tuesday August 30, 2011

Today we drafted another design to represent our exhibition through concepts, feelings and communication.

PRACTICAL – Design Communication
20 mins – Basic Design / 20 mins - Refining / 15 mins – Presentations

  1. DESIGN a headline & tagline draft for the student exhibition.

  1. Make a list of 2 key concepts you are trying to communicate
§  Outback/Territory Feel
§  Design Representation

  1. Make a list of 2 key feelings your trying to communicate
§  Warm
§  Interesting

  1. REFINE your headline to communicate these 4 things
Use warm colours to reflect the Outback and the Northern Territory to make it both recognisable and instill a warm feeling. Use text that is not so traditional so it is more evident of representing art.

5. Prepare to present your communication skills to the class.
6. Upload all this content to your blog

GROUP EXERCISE – Concept Investigation
20 mins:
Using a scale of 1 – 10,
Each group assigns a quantitative rating for all the designs,
based on the three criteria below
1. Clear rendition of 2 key concepts
2. Clear rendition of 3 key feelings
3. Immediate visual appeal
Each student post the group results in your blog

Design Inspiration

Commentary
This is a very inspiring clip that involves a series of cut out words appearing in white on a pitch-black background. It is a sales pitch for Alligator Wine using graphic design in a practical Communication tool through word puppetry. It is very clever and allows the mind to find new ways of thinking to inspire for our designs. The negative space and the music chosen enhances its entertainment appeal

Reflection
Communication is the main aspect we are trying to achieve in Graphic Design. If the designs do not reflect the company/organisation/individual, the design is not going to be successful. We need to communicate well through colour, space, psychology, relevance, pictures, and words before integrating them all into something simple. This may seem hard to condense, but with all the ideas put on the table with different aspects of each we can narrow down and compare ideas to come up with something dynamic.
