Today we talked about our 3D designs in a group and developed our ideas further by listening to the input of others.
GROUP EXERCISE – Concept Realisation
Selecting:
materials
tools
equipment
Discuss your choice of the above as a group – give reasons
Irrigation Coffee Table
Materials – small soft pipe (prototype), harder thicker pipe (final) Plastic/Rubber Mat (prototype lid) Perspex (final lid)
Tools – Pipe glue or Special Adhesive
Equipment – gloves,clamps
I have created a prototype to a smaller scale than that of the final piece and so I used smaller products and softer pipe. I also used a makeshift lid to sit on top of the frame.
The final design will be to a standard coffee table size of approximately 80cm wide and 100cm long (0.8m x 1m). The pipes themselves screw together however I will have to glue the Perspex lid to the pipe frame using a good adhesive. I will need to use gloves because the glues will be strong and clamps will hold the two in place to give a firm hold to adhere to.

Commentary
This is my own video I uploaded to show a more in depth look at my prototype coffee table. You can see it is quite lightweight and so the final product will have to be rigid enough to be used outdoors and still light enough to be moved around. My brother Martin Shot the video on my iPhone.
Reflection
Today reminded me to contact NT Acrylic and Plastics to chase up a cheap yet effective Perspex lid for my final product. I would like to use glue to join the lid and the frame however the frame may be composed of more expensive parts as the prototype’s parts came to a total of $150. I may have to be loaned the parts from the shop and apply a temporary way to bond the lid so I can return the parts to the shop after exhibition. Maybe some pipe clips can help.
Keep chipping away at that table. I love the fact that it's actually functional. That's the whole purpose of design ultimately. Effective function with the simplest form possible.
ReplyDeleteMaybe you could provide some competition for IKEA!
